Battlegreen
Tennis League, Lexington, Massachusetts
Battlegreen Tennis League is a recreational league that promotes tennis by scheduling recreational doubles matches. Participants in the league complete an application in spring with the first games beginning the week of April 28 and continue through September 12.
When you sign up for the league, you will indicate your skill level (follow this link for the guide to rate yourself), playing availability, playing preferences and dates you do not want to be scheduled. There is a cutoff date listed on the application in order for you to be scheduled for first 4 weeks of play. About a week before the first week of play, the first month's schedule will be posted on this website (see link at the bottom of this page). Afterwards any additional applications will be processed and players will be added to the schedule every 5-weeks (posted at least a week before the first week of games as indicated by the dates in bold on the application form). Any changes to your availability to play must be communicated to the webmaster 12 days before the start of each quarter-period in order to make it to the schedule.
Play is generally 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday - Thursday, at Lexington's Center Tennis Courts on Worthen Road (at the Lexington High School Track Field). You will be scheduled for at least one game per week with the possible exception of a monthly trip to the BYE list. Players may also be on the schedule and the BYE list. The BYE list is used by scheduled players as the first place to find substitutes, so when you are on the BYE list you will find yourself fielding calls to play. Play is generally mixed-doubles (but not always). If your name is highlighted and in bold, you are playing more than 1x that week.
It is each player's responsibility to arrive to the court at the designated time and be available for play through the end unless all players agree to alternate times in advance. This generally means three sets. If you find that you cannot make the appointed game, it is your responsibility to find a suitable substitute (using the BYE list, contacting others on the Battlegreen Tennis roster or as a last resort contacting others not on the league) and informing the designated game captain of the substitute's name and contact information.
Approximately once per month you will be the designated Game Captain (indicated on the schedule as the first name on the list of the 4 players). It is then your responsibility provide a NEW can of balls, VERIFYING that four players will be at the court and canceling the game (by personally contacting each player) for bad weather (rescheduling it if possible). The Game Captain will pick the players for each side and adjusting the sides for even play between sets. This is non-competitive tennis so scores and standings are not recorded. The Battlegreen Tennis League will reserve the courts for the League's scheduled matches, including lights when so required (for the courts that have lights). The League players have the reservation memorandum from the Town of Lexington to allow play at the courts at the scheduled time, see the link on this page.
If you are a Lexington, MA resident your fee will include a Lexington Recreation Department tennis pass allowing you to make additional reservations according to their current fee structure. This generally means free reservations during daylight hours at any of Lexington's outdoor tennis courts up to 1 week in advance, and an hourly court fee for outdoor courts under the lights. Here is the link to the hours at the Lexington Tennis reservation booth.
Additionally, you can sign up for the competitive singles tennis ladders, one for men and another for women. In this case you will be be scheduled to play against another player. It is each player's responsibility to arrange (contact the other player and schedule the time and place), complete the matches in a timely manner (generally within 2 weeks) and report the results to the webmaster. The links to the ladders are posted on the bottom of this webpage.
History: This League was the brainchild of Alvin Lester Glick as an outgrowth of the leagues he started at Mitre and Raytheon. He maintained this league for over 30 years until his death in November 2004. His patience, diligence, caring and tennis ability will be remembered fondly. Here are a couple of pictures of Alvin:
